Vancouver-based Plentyoffish.com has been one of the top 10 online dating sites in North America and founder Marcus Frind has been pondering openly on his blog as to the direction of his company. He keeps the business operation very streamlined, running the site by himself out of his apartment and now looking to find new ways to leverage revenue opportunities above and beyond Google’s AdSense which he’s had a lot of success with (see picture beside). While AdSense has helped to keep the business profitable the rising costs of database servers has Marcus now wanting to offering paid services to the users of the site.
Many of the predictions and reports over the last few month have said that online advertising will take a dip in 2009 due to the current economic conditions so Marcus is smart to start looking for a more “guaranteed” revenue model.
If you take a look at the site and show a usability expert they will probably cringe, but his numbers don’t lie and people love the site but will they continue to love it if they have to pay?
