Will Zoompass Be the Paypal Mobile Killer?

What happens when you get executives from 3 of Canadians largest telcos and the all ask “how can consumers send and receive money on their mobile phone?” Up until now the most obvious answer was Paypay Mobile, but now Bell, Rogers and Telus have joined together with EnStream LP, a mobile commerce company to launch the new service in Canada. Privacy and security have been long time concerns of consumers shopping online but eCommerce has become a standard practice for consumers.  Customers of the service will be able to link their bank account or credit cards to load or transfer funds from their account or go shopping.  The first phase of the service will target consumers but EnStream plans to eventually offer mobile payments to small and enterprise businesses which will open an entire new world of commerce as mobile commerce is expected to top 190 million according to research firm Gartner Inc.

One thing that Zoompass for it self right out of the gate is its Zoompass Prepaid MasterCard Card that will allow consumers the ability to make secure purchases in stores and on the Internet using their Zoompass account and by partnering with MasterCard they tap into an existing network of milions of stores worldwide and approximately 1.5 million ATMs.

According to a post on the company’s Twitter account (Zoompass), “Considering that other online payment services charge $1.50, we think 50 cents is reasonable.”  Sounds like Paypal might have a little stiff competition and the Canadian eCommerce landscape is about to heat up!
