Which industries won the battle for online holiday shopping dollars?

With the holiday season behind us retailers can start to breathe and look at the results of all that hard work and effort to attract and turn online visitors into customers. According to comScore Media Metrix online retail was the big winner in the pre-holiday online shopping rush. Overall e-commerce spending on US based sites increased to 26% over the 2005 holiday season to $24.6 US billion the top “nine” online categories are the following:


  1. Jewelry/Luxury Goods/Accessories was the top gaining category in December, growing 21-percent for the second consecutive month to 21.9 million visitors
  2. Shipping, up 19 percent overall to 34.6 million visitors
  3. E-cards, up 15 percent overall to 45.1 million visitors
  4. Sports/Outdoor, up 15 percent overall to 32.6 million visitors
  5. Retail-Food, up 11 percent overall to 17.2 million visitors
  6. Retail-Movies, up 11 percent overall with 28.2 million visitors
  7. Retail-Music, up 10 percent overall to 29 million visitors
  8. Computer Hardware, up 9 percent overall to 66 million visitors
  9. Apparel, up 8 percent overall to 61.9 million visitors
