Just when I thought AOL had no where left to go but the chopping blog they dig back into their wallet one more time and acquire an ad network. They announced last week they will be acquiring online behavioral targeting advertising network TACODA for $275 million which is an appetizer when you compare other recent ad network purchases by AOL rivals such as the $6 billion purchase of aQuantive by Microsoft, $3.1 billion of DoubleClick by Google and $680 million of RightMedia by Yahoo. Will over $10 billion spent by these four companies bring advertisers better targeting?

Microsoft also announced last week they have acquired AdECN an advertising exchange platform similar to how a stock exchange serves as the hub for financial brokerages, enabling all parties to come together and have access through a neutral party to a larger pool of supply and demand for their clients.
