Waterloo, Canada named Intelligent Community of the Year with help from hometown hero Research In Motion

With hometown companies such as Research In Motion and other technology based companies such as Sybase, Open Text have helped Waterloo, Ontario, Canada become selected as the 2007 Intelligent Community of the Year by the Intelligent Community Forum. Waterloo is part of Canada’s Technology Triangle which is home to 115,000 people and accounts for 45% of job growth and is home to 40% of the high-tech firms in the region. The city has made headlines over the last few years with Bill Gates visit to the University of Waterloo in October of 2005 and RIM’s CEO front and center. Google has also helped to draw some attention to the city with their acquisition of Reqwireless, which was founded in 2001 by graduates of the university.
What makes Waterloo a vibrant technology community?
Size does matter, and with a smaller geographical area, Waterloo has benefited from a strong community that has been able to establish many research programs and institutes which have been funded by local entrepreneurs and company support. Also the city’s university which continue to crank out top talent that has attracted companies such as Google to set up career fairs. Of course local hometown hero Research In Motion has helped to draw world-wide attention to the city with their maker Blackberry devices which is often been nicknamed the “crackberry.”
The awards were presented as part of the annual Building the Broadband Economy conference held in New York City. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) www.intelligentcommunity.org is a nonprofit think tank that focuses on job creation and economic development in the broadband economy.
