University students use YouTube to fight the government

Social media has predominately been used to make money or for entertainment purposes, but the Ryerson Students’ Union are turning to the power of social media to take on the Ontario Government’s titration fee increases. A series of binomials have been created in this humourous campaign which are posted on the video sharing site YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/reducetuitionfees. A collection of eight videos features the song “Hand in my Pocket”, made popular by recent Capital One television advertisements, playing in the background while someone dressed as Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty follows unsuspecting Ryerson students around campus with his hand in their pockets. 
A call to action has been worked into this program for students to join the camping to reduce tuition fees and the National Student Day of Action on February 7, 2007.
The Ontario Liberal government canceled the tuition fee freeze and allowed fees to increase between 4% and 8% last March, since September over 50,000 petition signatures to members of the Ontario legislature and lobbied the government to reverse its decision.
