We’ve all heard the stories about Michael Dell starting starting Dell out of his parents garage over 20 years ago. Or the stories of how companies such as HP, Microsoft and Apple got their start on a shoe string budget and very grass roots approach. Fast forward the time clock to today’s generation of businesses. Is it possible to launch a business in a short time frame with very little start up capital and be successful? If you have ever spoken to Toronto based VC Rick Segal he definitely thinks it is possible, and it looks like Markus Frind might just have proven Rick right? Markus is founder of Vancouver based PlentyofFish.com, an online dating site that has been creating a lot of buzz by successfully solving a very basic need, “helping singles find a good match without shelling out tons of money.”

If site metrics is a measure of success then PlentyofFish.com is doing pretty good, according to Alexa (which ranks web site traffic) the site is the most popular dating site in Canada and receives 400,000 user logins per day. Last week they launched their latest edition to the site, a section devoted to of all things, member marriage testimonials. In three hours after launching the section, there were 90 success stories added to http://www.plentyoffish.com/success.aspx and it has grown exponentially since then to 295 stories.

Mark Brooks over at OnlinePersonalsWatch.com, tracks the online dating scene and it sounds like he’s impressed by the offering so far, but will the latest Canadian dating site, eHarmony Canada give PlentyofFish.com a run for Markus a run for his money?
