A few weeks into the new year and there is no signs the market slowing down, especially as it relates to technology. For those of you reading living and working on the Toronto area, the Conference Board announced their Metropolitan Outlook for Winter 2007. Mario Lefebvre, Director, Metropolitan Outlook Service where he says “After a disappointing 2006, Toronto will see modest gains in 2007, but will still be well behind the national leaders from the west in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver” Better results are expected for 2008 due to a strong Canadian dollar on industries that take part in foreign trade.

The big news of last week was Apple’s announced about their new iPhone (see pictures below) which is by all accounts will disrupt many existing businesses, but at the same time will probably result in a big cash payout to Cisco as they have had the right to the name “iPhone” for years, where Apple’s lawyers sleeping or are they going to beat that the 8.9% increase on their stock price the day of Steve Job’s announcement is just the start of what is to come? Over at CES, Bill Gates once again gave the keynote presentation where he took the opportunity to share with the attendees and listeners around the world about the “Connected Experience.”

Rare Method was named Alberta’s 2nd fastest growing company by Alberta Venture Magazine in partnership with KPMG. With revenues less then $20 million, this is the third consecutive year they have appeared on the Fast 50 list. Located in Calgary, Rare Method provide interactive marketing programs to help their customers acquire, convert and retain customers.

Deal Flow

Burntsand Inc. announced the signing of $960,000 in new contracts for a leading financial services customer. This new engagement will extend Burntsand project teams to work on enterprise content management and custom .NET development in 2007. Burntsand is a business consulting and technology services company which implements, architects and designs information technology Global 2000 companies.

Oakville based Parlay Entertainment Inc. has signed a deal with a leading Scandinavian online gaming company Expekt.com to provide online bingo technology, no report on what the deal is worth.

Conair Canada, you know the personal care guys have selected Toronto has selected scratch and rock-it to help promote brand awareness and stimulate sales with some new public relations campaigns. We reported about scratch late last year with their Cuisinart campaign targeted at mothers across Canada.

Mamma.com signed a deal with Thomson Local to provide Search Distribution services to help with their local directory publishing business in the UK. Mamma.com has had a lot of growth with their vertical search platform and this deal will provide Thomson Local advertisers on keyword matches, offering a comprehensive search for the UK users.

By the Numbers

Tucows a leading provider of Internet services to web hosting companies, ISPs and other service providers worldwide, today announced that its Board of Directors has approved a stock buyback program of up to $10 million for the repurchase of its common stock.

Alliance Atlantis which has brought us one of the most popular CSI franchise is being purchased by CanWest Global and Goldman Sachs for a total of $1.95 billion, pending regulatory approval.
