Every so often Canadian wireless carrier find a way to play in the same sandbox, and this time it is a huge benefit to Canadian wireless customers.  After a brief trial on two-way wireless video calling between Bell, Rogers and TELUS, Rogers has announced the upcoming service is one step closer to becoming a reality.  Video calling would allow wireless customers a ’see-what-I-can-see’ connection with other callers, enabling them to do things like share special moments or get advice on a birthday gift before they buy.

“We are proud to be part of the first inter-carrier partnership in North America to enable clients to call each other using video capabilities,” said Stephen Howe, chief technology officer for Bell Mobility. “By breaking down the barriers between video calling clients in Canada, we anticipate strong demand for the service – as we saw with past inter-carrier initiatives such as text and picture messaging.”

Currently consumers can use mobile video calling through several carriers, but both callers must be on the same carrier’s network using compatible handsets. No official word on when this new inter-carrier mobile video calling will be launched.

While many companies have been quick to launch mobile app stores, Mplayit has taken a different approach and created an online catalog on social networking site Facebook. Although users can access Mplayit regardless of the carrier they are using, Mplayit has signed a deal in Canada with Rogers that tie the service to specific manufactures app such as Apple iPhone, Research In Motion (RIM) Blackberry or Google Android smartphones.

It has been just over a month since Rogers launched their new Rogers On Demand and according to the company has already surpassed 1.8 million page views. Looking across Canada, 46,000 Canadians have registered for the service that brings a variety of aggregated and premium content online or through a Video on Demand (VOD).

“With over 1.8 million Rogers On Demand Online page views in just over one month, Canadians are telling us they are ready to take TV beyond the box and have already made Rogers On Demand Online a great Beta launch success,” says David Purdy, Vice President, Video Product Management. “We’re committed to continually adding new content and partners, and given the great feedback we’ve been receiving, Rogers will be unveiling new features and functionality including live streaming, social networking and wireless access features in the near future.”

We’re heard a number of different reports on customer experience with the Rogers On Demand service but considering it it is less than 6 months old there will be some room for error.

So the intertubes have been all a buzz in the last 24 hour over Amazon’s Kindle DX, the baby brother to the Amazon Kindle being available internationally.  The 9.7″ screen can hold up to 3,500 books, documents or periodicals and it is available for pre-order in Canada, but there still is no Canadian wireless provider who can provide service for the device.  Wait a minute, this sounds very familiar….

I’m not quite sure what the hold up is with the carriers, Bell, Rogers, TELUS, WIND Mobile, can someone make the Kindle or Kindle DX available for Canadian consumers?

Canwest News Service had a chance to interview Canada’s Industry Minister Tony Clement who had this to share about the recent overruling of the CRTC’s decision to prevent Globalive from launching,  “This government made a decision a couple of years ago that we wanted more competition in the wireless space, that this was important for consumers, it was important for our economy,” the industry minister said. “So the momentous decision wasn’t the Globalive decision, the momentous decision was the decision we made a couple of years ago to set aside spectrum for auction to new entrants, rather than the current incumbents.”

There is no doubt that the decision to overturn the CRTC’s ruling is still creating a lot of controversy within the Canadian wireless sector as Bell, Rogers and TELUS are each hoping to hold on their their market share, but it is inevitable that we will see more competition in Canada.  Global Globalive is now live and DAVE Wireless is probably next, well once the CRTC is done re-investigating their current structure and stop preventing business growth in Canada.

With Rogers recent financial investment into new media studio Vuguru, we can expect to see the quality and diversity of content that Rogers makes available through its digital TV and online channels increase in the coming year.  Vuguru has recently announced the hiring of Larry Tanz as President where he will bring even bigger opportunities to the studio and brings more than a decade of experience producing award-winning content and securing distribution, sponsorships and funding across traditional and new media platforms.

Looks like Apple is getting ready for a battle as they announced they have counter sued Nokia who originally filed suit alleging that the iPhone infringes on GSM and wireless LAN related patents owned by the Finnish company.

Facebook

Facebook Connect celebrated its 1st birthday and over 60,000 users worldwide. Facebook Connect is a system developed by the social networking site that can integrated into websites and blogs (any online property) that allows users to by-pass registration and leverage their Facebook profile id.
The social networking giant also updated their privacy tools for users, this caused quite a stir with security “experts” who question what will become of users information. Founder Mark Zuckerberg is also trying to show us that Facebook is safe as he’s made his profile publicly available.

Google

One of their new services is Googles, which allows the user to take a phone using their mobile device Google will return search results of what the image is that you just sent.  It is currently is only available on Google Android phones.

Speaking of Google and phones, more and more stories (and images) are starting to surface all over the Internet of what the Google phone will look like.

Last Monday they also announced a deal had been signed with Twitter to join the real-time web “revolution” and start to share search results from Twitter.

Microsoft

After Microsoft picked up an early Christmas gift for it self last week as they acquired Opalis Software, a maker of IT process automation technology.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Research In Motion

RIM, maker of the world famous Blackberry smartphone has followed Apple’s lead and signed a deal with to also sell their device in China as the manufacturer has signed with China Mobile.

Yahoo

Yahoo announced they are integrating Facebook Connect on their sites; it makes sense with 350+ million people around the world using Facebook why not make it as easy as possible for them to use and share information on Yahoo properties.

Taking a page of the Google play book, Yahoo also signed a deal with Twitter start and show search results from Twitter.

Well the Big 3 wireless providers have nothing better to do (which should be providing the type of service that consumers want) have decided to sue one another over verbiage that is used in their advertising campaigns.

First TELUS sued Rogers over the use of “Canada’s most reliable network”over advertising that said that with speeds “two times faster than any other” were “fast, misleading and harmful” to its business. A B.C Supreme Court justice granted TELUS a temporary injunction against the carrier and order Rogers to take down the ads. Rogers did file an appeal and said they would take further steps in this matter.

“Rogers no longer has a network advantage, so should not be misleading the Canadian public with false superiority claims,” TELUS spokesman Shawn Hall said, adding Bell is not involved in the case.

TELUS approached Rogers on November 5 demanding that Rogers stop making the claims, but Rogers refused, TELUS filed its lawsuit November 12.

A few days later Rogers then in turn filed suit against Bell again in a B.C Supreme count. In a statement Rogers said “Bell has no valid support to claim faster speed and more reliability on a network that has virtually no customers and no proven track record on this new network.”

Should Canadians Sue Bell, Rogers And TELUS?

It is probably safe to say that a number of wireless consumers have some type of compliant against their provider, in the case of Bell, Rogers and TELUS they combined have over 90% of the market share in Canada so there will be a large number of unhappy customers.  The service that is currently provided from the Big 3 Wirelss providers needs to change if the Canadian mobile industry is every to truly grow to the level that we hear about in other countries around the world.

Maybe we should ban together and sue them?
