Now that Rogers new Chatr Wireless is officially hear WIND Mobile continues to celebrate with a number of promotional activities. Today Anthony Lacavera, Chairman of Globalive and WIND Mobile and Ken Campbell, CEO of WIND Mobile were hand in downtown Toronto at Yonge & Dundas where were selling “fair priced” hot dogs for one dollar (a reference to their TV commercial featuring a hot dog cart) see video below:

So it looks like WIND Mobile is serious about offering Canadians “No Whammies” and is ready to say “Let’s Make A Deal”

I don’t want to think about how cold it was outside as over 150 employees, media and other Torontoians gathered to be part of Canadian history as WIND Mobile held their official launch event. We were on hand to capture the moments for you, here is one of the videos we shot earlier this morning.

Anthony Lacavera and Ken Campbell were both on hand to share their excitement and thoughts on what this day means to the company and potential customers across Canada.

As part of the launch event, WIND Mobile unveiled a statue (video above) at just outside their first store at Queens Quay in downtown Toronto.

WIND Mobile Launch Hours Away? Forth Canadian Wireless Carrier To Go Live

WIND Mobile is certainly making its share of headlines lately. Last week we reported that they finally got the green light to launch in Canada and become the forth wireless carrier. Yesterday we reported a strategic partnership with Blockbuster, that would allow the wireless carrier to sell their service through select Blockbuster retail stores in Calgary and Toronto.

There has been some buzz that the launch of WIND Mobile will occur tomorrow morning and they have also just confirmed they will be offering the Blackberry 9700 smartphone from Research In Motion.

“For our pending launch, we are delighted to confirm that the BlackBerry® Bold 9700 will be available to WIND Mobile customers,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of WIND Mobile. “This is a state-of-art 3G smartphone from one of the world’s leaders in wireless innovation. And our unique value proposition is to offer Canadians simplicity, control and value with our BlackBerry® service plans.”

Tomorrow WIND Mobile could be making history in the Canadian telecommunications industry.

WIND Mobile Signs Strategic Alliance With Blockbuster To Leverage Retailers Outlets

Whether they build it themselves or borrow, WIND Mobile is going to launch and launch very soon as CEO Ken Campbell said in a conference call Friday morning. The company has just announced a new partnership with Blockbuster Canada that will give them a retail presence in 13 locations across Ontario and Ontario.

“This is a win-win-win for our two companies but most of all, for prospective customers,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of WIND Mobile. “We’re focused on creating an excellent customer experience and we’ll be doing that directly in 16 Canadian locations of Blockbuster – a leader in its field.”

Update: Wind Mobile Could Launch As Early As Next Week

Just got off a conference call where Anthony Lacavera, Chairman, Globalive and WIND Mobile Ken Campbell, CEO, WIND Mobile shared the good news to a room full of Globalive employees, friend and media. Now that is it official that Wind Mobile will become Canada’s 4th wireless provider the real hard work is about to begin. As Anthony said, “we now need to prove to Canadians we are a carrier they can trust.”

Wind Mobile Gets The Green Light, Will Become The Forth Wireless Provider In Canada

Anthony Lacavera (CEO of Globelive, parent company of Wind Mobile) and Ken Campbell (CEO of Wind Mobile), I’ll admit it, I had my doubts that Industry Minister Tony Clement would over turn the CRTC decision and give Wind Mobile the green light to become the 4th Canadian wireless provider but it is officially true.

“The decision to vary the CRTC Globalive decision, let me emphasize, was based on the legal facts and not on the government’s position that there needs to be more competition in the marketplace,” Mr. Clement said.

At the end of the day Ottawa does want more competition in the Canadian wireless space, let’s be honest they will make more money that way right? Mr. Clement’s decision to over turn the CRTC ruling was based on the fact that 80% of Globalive’s voting shares are Canadian where as the CRTC was looking at the fact that 65% of the ownership of Wind Mobile was with Orascom Telecom Holding SAE, a Cairo-based carrier owned by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris.

Competition is good, competition is healthy, except today in the case of Bell, Rogers and TELUS who have all seen a decline in their stock price today as a result of the news.

What Is Next For Wind Mobile?

Since being blocked by the CRTC, Wind Mobile is trying to figure out their next move will be. Their options are limited including selling to Rogers, who recently announced they’d consider buying the “soon to be launched” wireless provider. Or perhaps they might consider a deal with Bell or TELUS, or Shaw Communications and Quebecor’s Videotron one of the other cable giants who are expanding wireless offering in Canada.

I am sure Globalive CEO Anthony Lacavera and Ken Campbell CEO of Globalive Wireless are shopping the company in hopes of trying to secure financing in Canada. The other option they have is to appeal to Industry Minister Tony Clement to overturn the CRTC ruling against them.

WIND Mobile Gets Ready For Prime Time, Signs Five Communications Partners

As WIND Mobile prepares for its launch in late 2009 CEO Ken Campbell has been actively blogging on how the company will change the landscape of wireless service to Canadians. This next year is certainly going to be an interesting time for the wireless industry as a number of new players will be entering the market. In preparation for their launch WIND Mobile recently hired a number of agencies to help to fulfill their various requirements including AmoebaCorp, Breakhouse Inc, Narrative Advocacy Media, Starcom MediaVest Group and Trapeze Media.

The five agencies recnetly hired by WIND Mobile will provide:

AmoebaCorp is responsible for the creation of the brand’s visual identity and its design implementation across packaging, merchandising and branded facilities
Breakhouse Inc. has been engaged to design all retail points of sale, from flagship to kiosk
Narrative Advocacy Media is responsible for the development and execution of all public relations campaigns, strategic communications as well as social media counsel
Starcom MediaVest Group is handling media strategy and buying
Trapeze Media is responsible for the creation and ongoing development of windmobile.ca and digital marketing communications

“Each agency we’ve selected to join our team has a proven track record of creativity and innovation supported by exceptional people who are ready to help WIND shake up Canada’s wireless industry,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of WIND Mobile. “Our team has been fully impressed with their comprehensive understanding of our business objectives and creative aspirations and we are more than confident that together we will produce some exceptional integrated campaigns that will inspire and entertain Canadian consumers.”

They have certainly been aggressively boasting that WIND Mobile will “usher in a new era of mobile communications by improving the wireless experience for Canadians,” and time will tell whether this is true or not, I just hope the company will offer a better choice that what we’ve had thrown at us by the current Canadian wireless providers.

Globalive Wireless Rebrands To WIND

Looking to break the mold of the current Canadian mobile landscape Globalive Wireless made their re-branding and corporate name change public at an internal meeting today. The mobile division of parent Globalive Holdings will now be know as WIND. “Today, we get one step closer to offering Canadians more choice, innovation and affordability when it comes to their wireless provider by bringing an already-recognized global wireless brand to Canada” said Anthony Lacavera, Chairman of Globalive Holdings.

The company has been quick to embraces the social nature of the Internet and frustrations that many Canadians feel over current wireless providers Bell, Rogers and Telus and through their online forum Wireless Soapbox designed to give Canadians a voice.

“This is an exciting day for wireless in Canada and a historic moment for our company,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of Globalive Wireless. “WIND is founded on the power of conversation and we believe that through a healthy dialogue with our customers, we can create a wireless service that will surpass our competitors’ current offerings. It’s time to raise the bar for wireless service in this country and make Canada’s wireless services comparable to the likes of Europe and the United States.”

At a Mobile Monday event earlier in the year I asked Anthony about the position his company plans to take against the current Big 3 wireless players and he said they will not be head to head competition, personally I think he will have no choice but to provide services that will compete and be better than the others if he plans to be in the Canadian wireless industry for the long haul. The company is projecting to launch its service across Canada by 2010.
