Sony Canada is getting deeper into the music biz… On November 16 they are launching a new service called CONNECT which offers Canadians over 1 million songs and thousands of new tracks each week. The songs will be available from all major music labels and thousands of independent labels. Senior Marketing Manager Gabrielle Holmes says “with this launch we can now offer Canadian consumers a comprehensive online music service to complement their Walkman digital music players.”
If my math is right that now brings the Canadian online music service space to (3) players. Apple’s iTunes who is the
dominante player, PureTracks, which recently took investment from Sympatico/MSN, Sony’s CONNECT just in time for those holiday dollars.
Who is going to win the battle? Let’s face it songs are songs and there isn’t much disctintion in that, but user experience will be the key to winning the race for consumer dollars. Unfortunately Puretracs is lagging behind as the service doesn’t work on the Mac platform, we’ll see on November 16th if Sony’s will.
