The web just got a little more tightly woven thanks to RoamAbout.
The product is one of the first steps towards making websites and applications instantly accessible, without tracking back or linking.
RoamAbout lets users access Google’s OpenSocial applications from anywhere on the web-and without having to return to social network sites like Hi5 or Linkedin. It essentially acts as an OpenSocial container, giving remote access to the apps from any website.
It will also allow remote access to sites that don’t support OpenSocial apps, like Facebook-something smugly noted in the product’s press release.
It’s for this last part that communicators should take note. A RoamAbout application called Fetch lets Facebook users check for updates and messages from anywhere on the web. In essence, Facebook is participating in RoamAbout whether it likes it or not.
Technology like RoamAbout will eventually expand beyond remote social network access. People will receive instant updates no matter where they are on the web. While this already exists for Smartphone users and the seriously plugged-in, instant updates will be a reality for web users everywhere.
In other words, the dissemination of information is going to get even faster.
While this means that communicators will have to keep on their toes more than they already do, there are opportunities as well.
Community polls, feedback charts and update applications could be created by businesses to provide constant communication with a business’ stakeholders.
RoamAbout might make the net a little smaller, but it can also make it easier to communicate.
