Ann Cavoukian, Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner has thrown down the gantlet in her fight against Google. Ok, well maybe not that drastic, but she has written a letter to Sergey Brin of Google in response to a recent U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton ruling that will now require YouTube (owned by Google) to disclosure of users’ information to Viacom who earlier had filled suit against Google. In her letter, Cavoukian said “I was astounded to learn that Google had been ordered to disclose certain YouTube information, which includes users’ login IDs and IP addresses, for use in Viacom’s copyright infringement lawsuit against YouTube.” The Commissioner felt that Judge Stanton had “failed to consider that user login IDs and video viewing habits can reveal a great deal of sensitive personal information.”
Her point is valid as the type of information that Google is now ordered to turn over to Viacom could be linked with other information on the Internet can be used to reveal sensitive personal information.
So what’s your take, are you concerned about your private information on YouTube being turned over to Viacom?
