Tyler Cavell has just received US$1M in a round of venture financing for his startup Internet Broadcast Corporation (http://www.NuVu.TV) based in Montreal. The site was launched last year and is branding itself as the “premier online destination for worldwide breaking TV news” with current distribution deals with such media outlets as Reuters, AP, Canadian Press, CBC that offers stories from Canada to Zambia, Turkey to the Krgyz Republic. While video sites aren’t a new thing, NuVu.TV has a unique business model as I had the opportunity to learn in my conference call with him.  He says “If Ted Turner were thirty, he’d be doing this today.” Tyler plans to become the CNN of the Internet by taking local broadcasts from local countries and then broadcast them internationally and provide “NuVu’s.”

To date he’s been able to sign up 32 distribution partners and will continue to add additional partners with a focus on Canada and the United States in 2007. He does realize that there is nothing to stop some of these partners from by-passing his service and servicing content directly, but is not worried and encourages media publications to embrace this changing world of news, “the more video that is out there by an individual broadcaster, the easier for us to aggregate it and disseminate it to our different audiences.” His business model is simple and in many respect no different then that of CNN. Ever notice the logos in the top left or right of the screen from another broadcasters or the Associated Press? These are syndicated feeds that are being provided from the original provider and revenue is being shared, this is the same way that NuVu.TV will earn its revenues. Tyler also has plans to partner with other portals who want to leverage their back end technology to embed the content that NuVu.TV provides and again provide for a three-way revenue sharing opportunity.

With the new Rogers VISION being announced, we’re entering into a new area of video consumption and NuVu.TV is planning to be at the forefront of broadcast news distribution. Will Tyler Cavell be able to build news broadcast system on the web as Ted Turner did it years ago with cable TV, check it out and you be the judge.
