One of Canada’s leading telecommunications providers Telus looks like it is putting a toe into the social media space with the launch of photo uploading and sharing capabilities to their site mytelus.com. The site has been around for a number of years but not heavily marketed, especially to their customer base in Ontario. With a customer base of 10.5 million including 4.9 million wireless subscribers, 4.6 million wire line network access lines and 1.1 million Internet subscribers they should be able to capitalize on this opportunity to up sell their customers. Users of mytelus.com can upload one gigabyte of digital photos to thier personalized account and share with family and friends. Interesting to note that when you go on the site it states “You’re looking at the first phase of the new-look of myTelus.”, so perhaps Vice President of Digital Content Fred di Blasio has a few secrets up his sleeve. According to the data from Harris Interactive which revealed that consumers are increasingly looking to store more and more digital content Telus is on the right path.
mytelus.com’s new photo section allows its members to:

o Securely store approximately 1,000 digital pictures for an unlimited period of time (up to 1 GB).
o Create private photo albums or share them with selected friends and family or the entire Internet community.
o Participate in the site’s many themed photo contests.
o Actively participate in the community by voting for other public photos and posting comments.
o Create electronic greeting cards using their personal photos.
o View photos from any computer with an Internet connection.
o Quickly import contact names from Outlook and Yahoo Mail to create personalized distribution lists.
