Canada’s first Social Media Press Release hits the mark
Ed Lee’s all jazzed because he and the iStudio crew along with High Road Communications have released Canada’s first Social Media Press Release for their client Weblo.com which was originally developed by Shift Communications. Overall they did a great job on the layout to make sure all the pieces are there - Delicious, Digg, photos of management team, a few quick bullets to start the release off. Still early to tell whether the new format will take off and it is great to see a Canadian PR firm FINALLY doing something versus just talking which many of them keep going.
Will Social Media Press Releases change the PR industry?
I’m not sure whether the model of the social media press release is something that makes sense for every company or vertical, after all the word “social” implies that others will talk about it. There just isn’t anything sexy about a new set of BFGoodrich Tires, so chances of seeing a blog about tires make it to the Technorati Top 100 is pretty slim. Not every company is “bloggable”, meaning that not every company is going to make it into Digg.
It is still early to see whether this press release was a success or not, but that also depends on how they define success of the release? Will it get picked up by Weblo.com target audience? Will the release generate a juicy media story, time will tell.
I applaud iStudio & High Road Communications for pushing through the status quo of the PR industry, and hopefully others across Canada will join them soon. However all this wouldn’t be possible without clients such as Weblo.com for embracing change.

thanks for the shout out dave - just to clarify, I had almost nothing to do with the release. It was all Brandy’s work.

Thanks Dave!
I’m looking forward to seeing the results of the release as well - this is new territory for all of us. I hope to work with High Road and Weblo to evaluate our efforts and get back to you on that.
I like to think that every organization is doing *something* bloggable - it’s just a matter of finding/communicating to the right niche, no matter how small that community may be. Luckily Weblo’s connected users are a perfect audience for a release like this.
