Changes are if you asked Rogers, Bell or Telus they would all agree that we have enough competition among wireless providers here in Canada, but most consumers will take one look at their phone bill say “the more the merrier.” In the US, Google has announced plans to enter the upcoming wireless auction. Back on the Canadian side of the boarder, and Quebecor has also announced its plans to enter the race. Toronto-based Globalive Communications Corp, parent of Yak Communications today announced that international wireless veterans, Weather Investments and Novator, have joined its syndicate to bid in the upcoming spectrum auction taking place on May 27, 2008. As part of its big a $235 million deposit was used to secure their spot on the list.
“With the depth and experience of Weather and Novator, Globalive is well positioned to become the most cost-effective, feature rich national wireless provider in Canada,” said Anthony Lacavera, Chief Executive Officer, Globalive Communications. “Our ability to attract these international partners is a reflection on the strength of the Globalive Wireless business plan and prospects.”
Globalive CEO adds, “With the depth and experience of Weather and Novator, Globalive is well positioned to become the most cost-effective, feature rich national wireless provider in Canada, our ability to attract these international partners is a reflection on the strength of the Globalive Wireless business plan and prospects.”
So what is your take, do we need another player in the Canadian wireless game?

In two words:
No.
iPhone.
In a couple more: Of COURSE we do need more providers.
3 things stand between canada and greatness. Lack of wireless competition, canada post and any mini virtual monolopy, and punitive taxes on small time purchases. Sort those out and you may yet be big in the world (apart from landmass which is real big)
Of course we need a new phone company-kneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…
Rogers, Bell, and Telus have been ripping us off for years…Look how cheap Wireles service is in the U.S.
.. We have a population of 32 million though.. Us is 500 million plus.. And by physical area the cost of putting a network up is just as much as in the states. So companies have to recover those costs, no?
Even with all these companies allegedly coming into Canada I don’t think there will be a big change.
You think Globalive will be allowed to sell you a $15/mo. unlimited plan and Bell/Rogers/Telus won’t roll over, or better yet sue?
