Governments around the world are starting to embrace the idea of open data more and more. As stated on Wikpedia, Open Data – is a philosophy and practice requiring that certain data are freely available to everyone, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control. It has a similar ethos to a number of other “Open” movements and communities such as open source and open access.
The City of Edmonton recently made a portion of the city’s data available to the developer community who has in turn created some interesting services that will make the day to day lives of Edmonton residents easier. Two of the new data sources that have been released are location of police stations and location of bus stops that are serviced by the Edmonton transit system. Apple iPhone development shop has created “MyStops” which is a downloadable app for the iPhone which takes advantage of the bus stop data and presents it to users in a graphical display.
This is just the beginning of the possibilities of how open data will be used, I’m sure within the next 2 years we’ll be able to vote for city officials using our mobile devices.
