On Wednesday night I attended the CIPA (Canadian Information Productivity Awards) which is now in its 14th year and has continue to grow year after year. Norm Kirkpartick, President and CEO of CIPA put together another great event with supporting organization such as CGI, HP Canada, CA and Rogers.

It is a great event that brings together the business side of technology to celebrate the accomplishments of innovation within Canada’s technology sector.
Some of the winners of the night include:
University of Ontario Institute of Technology at Durham College won a “Silver Award of Excellence, Organizational Transformation, Not for Profit” for a program where they gave every student a laptop and software matching the program they’re registered in. Now were was this when we were in school?
Lavalife with its 600,000 membership base won a “Silver Award of Excellence” for implementing a streamlined VOIP solution that has helped them to save an estimated $3.8 million in product equipment and $50,000 annually on maintenance. GS1 (formally the Electronic Commerce Council of Canada) the largest e-commerce standards organization in the world was awarded a “Gold Award of Excellence for their innovative solution that allows decreased registration times and helps with products speed-to-market time.
The team from High Road Communications was on hand to lend some support as well they’ve been the PR firm of record for the awards. Great job to their team for getting the word out.
Some interesting facts that I picked up from award presenters:
- Only 1% of computer chips made go into computers versus other technology products
- 11% of Deloitte’s Fastest growing technology companies are Canadian
- CIPA 2006 had 260 more attendees then last year
