Ok, I have a response both for Dave and Rae which will be better formulated in a post (and it's 2:14 am so I don't really have the full post well written and I'm not going to risk it).

First off, and as a prelude, I have to say that I don't do social media for a living. And I'm very grateful for that. I entered the world of social media because my blog became more popular, I socialized with the Vancouver tech/social media/PR community and they are my friends. In fact, many Canadian social media experts are my friends (not only Vancouver-based). I absolutely love Kate, Darren, Kris and Rebecca, all whom are in the semi-finalists. All of them, social media stars in their own merit.

I *do* feel as though it is sometimes a popularity contest and no, Rae, I am NOT surprised. Let me be brash and bold and say that being popular doesn't equal being smart, well-spoken, and having brilliant ideas. You have Paris Hilton as an example of popular and not having a lot "upstairs".

Also, for the record, I did NOT say that THIS was particularly a popularity contest, Dave. However, if you think about my viewpoint in detail, at least the first part IS a popularity contest (voting by the community, etc.) - the more popular a particular candidate is, the more votes he/she will get. Let's just call things what they are.

As for the second and third metrics, one can find all the flaws that they may want, and I could poke relentlessly until I found all of those. But that's not my point. As I said, I celebrate that Kris, Rebecca, Kate and Darren are in the semifinalists, but I'm puzzled as to why other social media stars didn't make the cut. That's all.

Dave - for the record, I might copy and paste some of this comment on my own blog.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('876','Raul Pacheco'); return false;">Reply</a> - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('876','Raul Pacheco','Ok, I have a response both for Dave and Rae which will be better formulated in a post (and it\'s 2:14 am so I don\'t really have the full post well written and I\'m not going to risk it).\n\nFirst off, and as a prelude, I have to say that I don\'t do social media for a living.
Raul - this is NOT a popularity contest; if you go back to the original post (3) different metrics are being used.
1 - nominations & votes from the community (so I'll agree with Rae's comments above)
2 - Postrank's tool to measure "engagement"
