Can mobile phones save satellite radio?

With services such as AOL Radio, iTunes and Puretracks are consumers really willing to cough up a monthly fee to pay for what they are used to getting for free? Do consumers want to purchase yet another new device? If the potential purchase of XM Radio by rival SIRIUS Satellite or XM Canada’s President and COO leaving the company earlier this month are any indication the life spam might be short for satellite radio.

So if you are a new entertainment service trying to break into an already crowed market space with competitors that have been around for well over 50 years, do you throw in the towel? You look for new distribution channels to take the unique content to the people instead of waitinfg for the people to come to you.

The company announced SIRIUS Satellite Radio’s commercial-free music programming is now available on Bell Mobility multimedia phones. Consumers with models such as the LG Chocolate, LG Fusic, Samsung m610 and Samsung a900 can take advantage of 100+ channels. XM Canada signed a similar deal with Rogers Wireless back in April 2007, which will extend XM Canada’s programming on their wireless network, cable and High-Speed Internet offerings.
