The fund train might have slowed down but it certainly hasn’t stopped and this couldn’t be more evident than with the news of two companies being funded by the Blackberry Fund. The fund is managed by Toronto-based VC, JL Albright Venture Partners and RBC Venture Partners in a play very similar to the Facebook fund which provides financial support to companies who develop applications for Facebook’s platform.
buzzd received $3.2 million in a Series A for its location-sensitive city guide and social network on the mobile device and Digby received $5.5 million in a Series B for its mobile commerce platform.
With strong financial support for application development on the iPhone and now on the Blackberry 2009 might just be the year that mobile truely takes off in Canada. Now if we can only get Bell, Rogers and Telus, or maybe we’ll have a new player to save to Canada’s wireless landscape.
