Some new data has been released by MSN Canada in partnership with Ipsos-Reid that reveals we Canadians “love our email”. Email is not just for business to business communications anymore as the results show that 76% of Canadians are creating ‘virtual shoeboxes’ with their email in box and using it to archive these important messages, documents and photos.
Some Key Findings:
- An interesting trend appears in the reported incidence of sending or receiving an engagement announcement via email. Only 7% have done this in Atlantic Canada, 12% in Ontario while 19% admit to it in British Columbia.
- Atlantic Canadians are the most reserved Hotmail users when it comes to sending personal announcements, invites or photos via email, with only six in ten (62%) preferring to send these items by email compared to 80% in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
- Half (49%) of Canadian respondents said they use email for ‘formal’ means of communications
- Technology isn’t just for the young - 58% of middle-aged Canadians and 43% of Canadians aged 55 and over claim that they have a Hotmail account.
Unlike your work email address that stays when you leave the company, 84% of Canadian Hotmail users claim to have kept one web-based email account throughout their job changes, home relocations, and other times of transition. These findings suggest that Canadians are using their Hotmail accounts as a means by which to maintain a consistent email address as they changed homes, jobs, and Internet service providers.
Results from the survey also so that that Canadians are also relying on email to communicate important messages and notices to family and friends. Eight in 10 survey respondents have sent or received family photos via email. Only 12% of respondents have even sent or received engagement announcements over the Internet and 10% have sent or received wedding invitations.

I am not surprised by these stats. I have held on to a UK email address for two years even though I live in Toronto now. I have an unexplainable attachment to it. I have created a new gmail address recently but I find having two strings of emails work. Not ready to divorce my self from Yahoo but not ready to commit long-term to gmail. What is a gal to do?
