Mobile service provider, Virgin Mobile Canada says its getting ready for its biggest text message usage ever, and anticipating 50 million users will be “tapping” their way into the New Year as they forgo the traditional kiss and big up their mobile devices.

“There’s no doubt about it, we’re becoming complete text maniacs and we get right into it on big occasions. Whenever we celebrate, people love to express how they feel with a text message. New Year’s Eve is the climax of that frenzy,” says Nathan Rosenberg, Virgin Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer. Rosenberg continued by saying, “If the clock strikes midnight and there’s nobody to make out with, it’s nice to know you can turn to your mobile and see if you’ve got any text message booty calls waiting.”

- On an average day in 2007, Canadians sent around 31.5 million text messages

- This New Year, Virgin Mobile estimates Canadians will send on average 2 text messages each - that’s double the amount of last year’s forecast

- Textaholics aged 18-30 will be the biggest texters on New Year’s Eve, sending an average of 4 text messages each

- Virgin Mobile estimates that one in four think they might get lucky this New Year’s Eve with a text, because it’s easier to send naughty texts than naughty phone calls

Last year New Year’s Eve text message tally was around 25 million, which could make this years expected number of 50 million a new Canadian record of text messages sent in a single day.
