Marketing Hall of Legends Inductees 2015Last night the AMA Toronto held its annual Marketing Hall of Legends where they took time to honor Canadians who have dedicated themselves to excellence in marketing. A packed room of  marketers, media, agencies and academics joined as we welcomed 2015 inductees Jeanne Beker, renowned entrepreneur Joe Mimran, research innovator Luke Sklar and the late, famed Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan.

VISIONARIES

Canada’s Joe Mimran is best-know for creating a succession of visionary brands and retail concepts, including Club Monaco, Caban and most recently, Joe Fresh. Club Monaco revolutionized the retail fashion world by introducing a distinctive minimalistic style and monochromatic palette. In 1999, Club Monaco and Caban were purchased by Ralph Lauren, marking Ralph Lauren’s first-ever acquisition. Joe co-founded Pink Tartan with his wife Kimberly Newport-Mimran, the principal designer – and he consulted on the creation of PC Home. In 2006, Joe became Creative Director of a “fast fashion” concept he co-created with Loblaw’s, Joe Fresh. He currently stars on the popular CBC show, Dragons Den, is Chairman of Gibraltar Growth Corp. a subsidiary of Gibraltar & Co Inv. a Toronto based private investment company, and is Chairman of FDCC (Fashion Design Council of Canada).

ENABLERS

Luke Sklar is all about helping others succeed. That’s what led him to create Sklar Wilton & Associates (SW&A), a marketing consulting firm dedicated to helping smart marketers succeed by turning strategic insights into game-changing business initiatives.

Twenty-nine years later, SW&A’s client list is long and showcases many of Canada’s most recognizable brands including Molson Coors, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire (including Sport Chek and Marks), Shoppers Drug Mart, Canada Bread, and Mars. Over the years, Luke and his team have uncovered insights that have grown these businesses via new product launches, award winning creative, new store designs, portfolio strategies, acquisitions and more.

BUILDERS

Jeanne Beker started her career as an actress, but moved into radio and then television as co-host of the ground-breaking series, The NewMusic, and entertainment anchor on CityPulse News. She went on to become the host of the internationally syndicated Fashion Television (FT), which aired for 27 years and had viewers in more than 130 countries. Jeanne is the former editor-in-chief of FQ and SIR magazines, and author of five books, including her 2010
autobiography, Finding Myself in Fashion. Jeanne was a contributing editor of The Toronto Star, The Kit, and a columnist for Metro, and is currently a featured style columnist for The Globe and Mail and Post City magazine.

MENTORS

Known as the father of modern media studies, the late Marshall McLuhan was a progressive and controversial figure who predicted the creation of the internet 30 years before its existence. McLuhan famously coined the term “global village” in his 1962 best-seller The Gutenberg Galaxy. His groundbreaking 1964 book Understanding Media introduced one of McLuhan’s most paradigm-shifting concepts: The Medium is the Message. In today’s fastpaced, media and technology-driven world, McLuhan’s work is more relevant than ever before.
