While Torstar Digital has been launching a number of new initiatives over the last few weeks, we have heard from two sources that five people on the TOPS team were laid off on Friday.  TOPS or Total Online Publishing Solution is a joint venture between Torstar Digital and Rogers, where the two have created a Content Management System (CMS) that not only manages a number of Torstar and Rogers owned online properties, but as well they sell the solution to third party companies.  We are still scratching out head as to why a publisher would get into the CMS business, it is far from their core competency and there are countless solutions out there that have a single focus on being the best CMS.  Not a huge number in the grand scheme of things, especially when you look at the growth of Torstar Digital owned Olive Media impressive growth, but no one likes to loose their job.
